Roller Shutters Adelaide

Big Difference supplies and installs insulated aluminium roller shutters for Adelaide homes. The slats are typically filled with polyurethane foam, which stiffens them, dampens sound and slows heat through the shutter. Choose battery or solar power so the shutters still work in a power cut, and the Sentry Fire Shield range rated to BAL-40 for bushfire-prone homes.

How do insulated roller shutters work?

Big Difference's insulated aluminium roller shutter slats are typically filled with polyurethane foam. The foam stiffens the profile, dampens sound and reduces heat transfer through the slat compared with a hollow aluminium profile, which helps in Adelaide's intense summer sun and on cold winter nights.

FeatureWhat it does
Foam-filled aluminium slatsStiffer slats, less noise and less heat through the shutter than hollow aluminium
Air space between shutter and glassWhen the shutter is closed, the still air layer adds resistance to heat flow and cuts direct radiant heat on the glass
Shutter mounted outside the windowStops direct sun before it reaches the glass

The enclosed air gap is sometimes called a "thermal chimney", but that is misleading unless the gap is deliberately ventilated. Its main benefit when the shutter is closed is a shaded, relatively still insulating air layer.

Bushfire-rated roller shutters up to BAL-40

Yes, Big Difference supplies and installs bushfire-rated roller shutters. We offer a product called Sentry Fire Shield, which has a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating of 40.

Bushfire-prone areas

Sentry Fire Shield, BAL-40

For homes in bushfire-prone areas, Sentry Fire Shield roller shutters are rated to BAL-40. Your home's assessed BAL sets what is required.

Do roller shutters keep the heat out?

Externally mounted roller shutters can block a very high proportion of direct sun before it reaches the glass. How much they improve the whole window depends on the shutter colour, the window type, the air gap and the installation, so we only quote a percentage where the supplier's current test data supports it.

Light and air

Perforated slats

Perforated slats let small amounts of light and air through when the shutter is lowered but not fully closed. Close the slats together for more privacy, darkness and weather protection.

Block-out

Fully closed

Closed shutters give privacy, darkness and protection from the weather, and dampen outside noise.

Battery, solar or mains-powered roller shutters?

Standard electric shutters will not operate during a power outage. Battery and solar systems keep stored power, so they still work when the power is off. Solar-powered shutters are especially useful where running mains cabling is difficult.

OptionIn a power cutGood to know
Standard electricWon't operateRuns from mains power
BatteryKeeps working on stored powerNo mains wiring at the window
SolarKeeps working on stored powerCharged by the sun; cycles per charge vary with shutter size, battery condition and sunlight

App, Google Home and Alexa control may be possible with a compatible motor, hub and home-automation platform. It isn't standard on every motor, so we confirm compatibility before manufacture, and you may need a separate gateway and reliable Wi-Fi.

Can roller shutters be locked against lifting?

Anti-lift locking is not standard on our roller shutters, but options are available. Ask about them at your measure and quote if security is a priority.

Headbox mounting, and how wide a shutter can be

We can mount the headbox and guides on the wall, within a suitable window reveal, or build them into new construction where the dimensions and access allow.

MountingBest forGood to know
On the wallMost retrofitsUsually the simplest option and keeps more of the opening
Within the revealA hidden, flush lookNeeds enough reveal depth, so it is designed early
Built into new constructionNew homes and renovationsPlanned with the builder before the walls are finished

The widest single shutter depends on the slat profile, shutter height, wind exposure, motor and supplier engineering. Large openings may need a centre guide or a different shutter system, so we measure and engineer each opening rather than publish one width for every product.

Roller shutters FAQs

Do you install bushfire-rated roller shutters?

Yes. Big Difference offers Sentry Fire Shield roller shutters, which have a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating of 40.

What is inside insulated roller shutter slats?

Big Difference's insulated aluminium shutter slats are typically filled with polyurethane foam, which stiffens the profile, dampens sound and reduces heat transfer compared with a hollow aluminium slat.

How much heat do roller shutters block?

Externally mounted roller shutters can block a very high proportion of direct sun before it reaches the glass. Whole-window performance depends on colour, window type, the air gap and installation, so a percentage is only quoted from the supplier's current test data.

Do electric roller shutters work in a power outage?

Standard electric shutters will not operate during an outage. Battery and solar systems keep stored power, so they still work.

Can roller shutters work with Google Home or Alexa?

App, Google Home and Alexa control may be possible with a compatible motor, hub and home-automation platform. It is not standard on every motor, so compatibility is confirmed before manufacture.

Are perforated roller shutter slats available?

Yes. Perforated slats let small amounts of light and air through when the shutter is lowered but not fully closed, and closing the slats together gives more privacy, darkness and weather protection.

Can the headbox be hidden?

The headbox and guides can be mounted on the wall, within a suitable reveal, or built into new construction. A hidden in-reveal result needs enough depth and should be designed early.

Do your roller shutters have anti-lift locks?

Anti-lift locking is not standard, but options are available. Ask about them at the measure and quote.

How wide can a single roller shutter be?

It depends on the slat profile, shutter height, wind exposure, motor and supplier engineering. Large openings may need a centre guide or a different system, so each opening is measured and engineered.

I was originally looking at installing a roller door but due to a height constraint a cafe blind was my next idea but Jarrod convinced me that a shutter would be much better and secure. The end result was outstanding, great workmanship and a neat and tidy job was the outcome. I highly recommend Big Difference Home Improvements for any type of home improvement solutions.

We chose Big Difference for our new home because it is a South Australian family owned business & is a "one stop shop" for home improvements. We purchased a pergola & blinds, plantation shutters for 4 rooms and 3 indoor roller blinds. We found Scott Parker to be competent, patient & reliable. His knowledge & expertise was invaluable in assisting our decision making. We are pleased with the products we have received to date.
